BALL! strange beaked creature A few peple said "howling at the moon, is it?" and I was like... shit, no, that's volleyball... I mean... really. It's a ball, that round thing. I was thinking 'two stupid dogs' BALL rather than anything else... a character in a dynamic pose, that's what it was all about...
this was actually the third in the series... the architectural piece was first, this was the third... the second is coming up in a second... Left the best for the very end
It also took me about 1.5 hour, compared to under 1 hour for the others. The only one to be done on a pencil sketch. Others were underpainted with black into the initial shapes.
Gouache and dry pastels. Or temperas or poster paints.
saying 'gouache' makes me feel like I'm trying to puke with mouth full of potato puree.
that's a pretty cetacean face! .. damn, i just looked up 'cetacean' because I was trying to spell it 'cecetean' ... i've been saying it wrong this whole time.
anyway, I am absolutely thrilled with that foreground hand ... that's the kind of thing that people spend years practicing to do, make a perfect hand like that with just brush strokes.
I think that to pull the ball forward in space, visually, you just need to darken or solidify the shadow on it, but that being said I don't really think it's actually a big problem.
I've said so many things wrong i my life, and remember it all so well, it wouldn't bother me at all Except I wouldn't be able to find it in a dictionary
It's a sort of an inverted beak. i got to research solid face elemnts like beaks more... they've got enormous potential...
The hand... eh, it's actually not painted. It's the white of the paper. It's painted all around. With black. And... I've got this thing with hands. I don't know why. Subconscious. I've never really practiced them, they just... emerged. I'm not really good at drawing hands with precision.
you're right about the ball... everyone thinks it's a moon. I'll keep this in mind, to define my shapes better... somehow in relation to [link] this comment, regarding the front wall.
Oooh, that makes the hand even more interesting. I wish I could say the same about having an innate hand sense, that's a really rare and valuable trait! The truth is that I spent a lot of time looking at my hands from different angles and, ironically, at the way hands are done in Dr. Seuss books.
That, i think, is a good discrepancy to keep in mind between drawing and painting ... the line values define space in a very definite way, but when you add areas of dark and light value they can override the natural layering.
